United Way Helps Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation

The Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation (CPRF) is one of 17 agencies who partner with Atchison Area United Way to support those who wish to make a positive change in the lives of others. CPRF has been helping those with disabilities increase their personal and economic independence through a variety of customized support programs since 1964.

Although CPRF has its main office in Wichita, and they serve many other counties across the state, including Atchison. The director of community outreach, Kacee Shuler, has been with CPRF for 11 years.

“CPRF provides wrap-around services for people with all types of disabilities, not just CP [cerebral palsy], of all ages,” she said.

The programs offered in Atchison by CPRF are the Wheelchair and Posture Seating Clinic and the Equipment Fund. The Wheelchair and Posture Seating Clinic designs, fabricates, customizes, and repairs wheelchair systems for their clients.

Most people served in Atchison are through the Equipment Fund. Through this program, individuals can find financial assistance for medical equipment and assistance technology. This equipment can be anything from ramps and lifts to communication devices and other home modifications.

“The devices are often very expensive [which] can provide financial hardship for our clients and our families,” stated Shuler.

By partnering with United Way, CPRF can create a funding package for each client in need in Atchison.

Oftentimes, CPRF covers expenses that insurance won't cover at all, or will only partially cover.

Through the funding packages, clients can secure what they need to live independently: getting to and from school and work, getting out and into the community, and the ability to live comfortably at home.

Shuler stated that with the funding from United Way, CPRF can serve more people in Atchison.

“I don't think we would be able to be part of the Atchison community without them. Their partnership is very important to us,” stated Shuler.
